Congratulations to the 2016 Field Hockey team for winning the 2016 SPC Championship with a 1-0 win over Trinity Valley.
The Mavericks' lone goal, scored midway through the first half on a shot by Reese Vogel '17, held up for a second consecutive SPC championship for St. John's Field Hockey. The tally off a corner was all the Mavericks needed for victory. Their tenacious defense and a tried and true game plan took care of the rest.
"We play everyone on our team and our goal is to wear down our opponent," said Head Coach Craig Chambers.
Today was no different than their first and second-round SPC tournament wins played yesterday. In the opener against Oakridge and in the semi finals versus ESD, their opponents scored early, but the Mavericks finished strong. In the championship game played on grass at St. Andrew's, Trinity Valley controlled the ball for the majority of the first half, yet St. John's took advantage of their first scoring opportunity on a corner.
"Natalie Stone '19 hit the ball to me and I got my stick on it for the goal," said Vogel.
"it all feels good to know we put in all of that effort to get that first goal," said Isabel Windham '18, who came back from knee surgery to help her team get back to the title game.
"It was great to be on the field with my teammates," said Windham.
"The soggy field was equalizer, and our girls had to fight and figure it out," said Chambers. "Finally they were able to start winning the ball."
