Endowment

Endowment gifts are often referred to as “ultimate gifts” because their impact is permanent in nature. These gifts support St. John’s in perpetuity and often have profound meaning in the lives of the donors. Endowment gifts can be directed in a number of different ways.

To establish a new fund, the current minimum thresholds apply:
  • Endowed Department Chairs $2,000,000
  • Faculty Chairs $1,000,000
  • Master Chairs $750,000
  • Fully Endowed Scholarship Fund $750,000
  • Visiting Speaker Series $500,000
  • Fully Funded Partial Scholarship Fund $300,000
  • General Scholarship Fund $100,000-$299,999
  • Named Restricted Fund $100,000
  • Named Unrestricted Fund $50,000

  • Unrestricted Endowment

    Gifts for unrestricted endowment can be made at any dollar level. Unrestricted endowment gifts provide the highest degree of flexibility for determining the best use of endowment yield in fulfilling the overall mission of the institution.
  • Endowed Department Chairs

    Attracting and retaining faculty leadership is a major priority. These leaders set the tone for other faculty members and serve as mentors to others as they grow professionally. Their role as pacesetters is a cornerstone to achieving continued excellence in the academic experience and achievement for St. John’s students. Department Chairs are permanently endowed funds that provide yield necessary to attract and retain such faculty leaders.
  • Endowment for Faculty Professional Development

    Robust professional development not only strengthens and enriches faculty and the student experience, but it also has a direct impact upon attracting and retaining the very best faculty.
  • Named Endowed Chairs Awards for Faculty Development

    These Chairs will now be awarded for an eight-year term or until the recipient leaves St. John’s. They provide $10,000 per year for faculty development with the expectation that the recipient will utilize skills and knowledge gained to mentor fellow faculty and will report progress back to the donor.
  • Named Endowed Master Teacher Awards

    Master Teacher Awards will now be awarded for a five-year term or until the recipient leaves St. John’s. They provide $7,000 per year for faculty development with the expectation that the recipient will utilize skills and knowledge gained to mentor fellow faculty and will report progress back to the donor.
  • Financial Aid

    Financial-aid endowment is an endowment priority that helps provide accessibility to a St. John’s education regardless of families' ability to pay the full cost of tuition.
  • Mark D. Desjardins Student Assistance Fund

    Established by the Board of Trustees in 2010 as a current use fund and converted to endowment in 2015. The Fund provides financial assistance to students who demonstrate need beyond the scope of normal financial aid awards. Originally known as the Headmaster's Student Assistance Fund, it was renamed in 2021 to honor St. John's seventh Head of School and his 11 years of exemplary service to St. John's. The Mark D. Desjardins Student Assistance Fund is critical in providing support to students for numerous costs that go beyond the reach of financial aid, including field trips, SAT prep classes, extracurricular activities, and other costs that can be prohibitive for participation.   • Named and Restricted Endowment Funds

    These permanent funds can be named and restricted to a particular area of focus within St. John’s identified needs and priorities as approved by the Head of School.
  • Named Endowment Funds

    These permanently endowed funds can be named in honor of a family member, faculty member or other member of the community as approved by the Head of School.
