Mavericks RSVP with Big Win at STH Invitational

Maverick Wrestling takes first high school championship at St. Thomas Invitational.

Led by Nathan Avery's ('13) first place win in the 182 lb class, the Mavericks pulled out their first team victory in the history of the high school program.  Heavy weight Alexander Saucer (HW)’12, Preston Neal (132) ’14, and Orion Hicks (145)’15 finished second.  Ben Stein (126)’13, and Eric Hobby (170) ’13 took third.  Walter Moore (160) ’13, and Zach Long (220) ’12 placed fourth.
With a team score of 126.5, St. John’s finished on top of the heap of mostly local competition, just ahead of Kinkaid (124) and host St. Thomas (117).  Beaumont West Brook took 3rd (112) followed by: Episcopal (110), Clear Brook (88), Cy-Fair (81), Evangel, LA (70), Brazoswood (65), Clear Springs (62), George Ranch (42), Jersey Village (29), Strake Jesuit (27) and Lamar (22).

Avery won the tournament Outstanding Wrestler Award.

"This was a huge win for the program," said Head Coach Alan Paul.  "The result speaks for itself, and I could not be more proud of our wrestlers."
