Mavericks win first game of the tournament against Duchesne

Brenda Mercado
It was a cool, but beautiful night to play field hockey at St. John's.  The girls were energized and wound up to play Duchesne for the third time this season.  With so much energy the girls couldn't quite put it all together for a while.  We were slow on our reaction time so crossed balls for goals were missed in the circle.  Finally at the 13:31 mark of the first half Chloe sent the ball towards the goalie's  pads where Virginia was ready for the rebound and shot it back into the cage.  The second goal was unassisted by Grace when she shot a strong push pass into the corner of the goal.  The final goal of the first half was scored at the 2:58 mark when April sent the ball to the left side of the circle and Audrey was ready to shoot it on past the goalie.  Halftime score Mavericks 3 Duchesne 0

The defense remained steady and kept the ball on our offensive end of the field most of the night.  In the second half the only goal scored (that counted--Chloe's goal was called back) was assisted by Grace and reverse stick in the goal by Christina.  The Mavericks had a tough time executing their corners tonight and hopefully Friday against Lamar the Mavericks can be poised and ready to score.

Final score Mavericks 4 Duchesne 0

The semi game will be Friday at Caven Field against Lamar starting at 4:00.
