The Mavericks riding a 3-0 record traveled to Dallas to play their first conference game against the Greenhill Hornets. Knowing the weather had been bad in Dallas all week with lots of rain the team was ready for anything and anxious to take their first of two conference trips north to play on the road. Stopping at Woody's in Centerville to stretch our legs halfway into the trip the weather was hit and miss the rest of the way. Fortunately the rain held off for the game but the field was pretty sloppy. The Mavericks lined up to receive the opening kickoff and Chis Gow made a great catch after the Hornets tried a pooch kick giving us the ball at the 38 yard line. Deja vu of last game hit quickly as on the first play from scrimmage Rush Moody went 62 yards up the middle for the score. Dan Tweardys extra point went wide and with only 14 seconds gone in the game the Mavericks were up 6-0. It did not take Greenhill long to answer. With a 10 play drive and some poor tackling they drove the ball 67 yards and finished with a 5 yard pass for the touchdown. Adding the extra point the Hornets took the lead 6-7 with 8:47 left in the first quarter. Jack Waller returned the ensuing kickoff 15 yards giving the Mavericks the ball on the 43 yard line. The offense took the field with some determination and put together their own 10 play drive to answer back. With the trio of Jett Williams, Rush Moody and Josh Winslow running the ball the Mavericks put it in the end zone on a Rush Moody 1 yard plunge. Josh Winslow then converted a two point play and the Mavericks were back on top 14-7 with 3:22 left in the first. After Tweardys kickoff and good coverage by Jack Craddock making the tackle on the 32 the Hornets begin their second drive completing some passes to get to the SJS 35. But the defense stiffened and held on a fourth and ten to give the ball back to the offense. The offense struggled having a three and out with Waller punting the ball back to Greenhill to start the second quarter. The SJS defense returned the favor and stopped Greenhill with a three and out to set up a Jett Williams punt return for 18 yards a good field position at the Hornet 32. The Maverick rushing attack then got back in gear running 7 plays with Rush taking it in from the 5 for another touchdown. With Tweardys kick the Mavericks increased their lead to 21-7 with 5:38 left until half. On the kickoff Tweardy booted the ball near the goal line and Waller came up with a big hit to put the Hornets starting at their own 24. The SJS defense then came up with another three and out forcing the Hornets to punt the ball after Gothard Reck knocked down a pass. The Maverick offense had a three and out of their own but Waller blasted a punt 42 yards and pinned the Hornets on their own 13. SJS defense bowed up again and forced an interception by Reed Daniel who returned the ball 17 yards aided by a big hit from Jack Waller. The offense got cranked up again getting the ball in good field position at the Greenhill 33 and went the distance in four plays including a 17 yard run by Josh Winslow and capping it off with a 16 yard pass from Josh to Jett for the score. Tweardy tacked on the extra point and the Maverick lead was 28-7 at the half.
The second half started with a kickoff by Tweardy who also made the tackle after a 34 yard return from Greenhill. The Hornets then put together an 11 play drive only to have the SJS defense deny them any points holding them out of the end zone on a fourth and goal from the 1 yard line with big hits from Gothard Reck and John Ytterberg. Taking over at the one the offense got some big plays from Jett Williams with a 16 yard pass from Josh and an 18 yard run to move the ball to mid field only to have a fumble giving up the ball on the SJS 48. On the first play after the fumble the Hornets went 48 yards on a run for the score to shorten the lead 28-13 at 5:48 in the third. The Mavericks failed to get a first down in their next possession with Jack Waller having to give up the ball on the punt. With some momentum on their side the Hornets put together an 11 play drive only to be halted again on 4 down by the SJS defense. The offense then cranked it up again and put together an 8 play 63 yard drive with Josh Winslow churning up most the yards and finishing with a 2 yard run for the score and a 35-13 lead going into the fourth quarter. The Greenhill Hornets not giving up put together their own 10 play 64 yard drive converting on a fourth and 25 with help from a roughing the passer penalty to finish off with a one yard pass for the score. Missing on the two point conversion the lead was cut to 35-19. The Mavericks were not finished either as they went 45 yards in 6 plays after the onside kick from Greenhill to increase their lead with 5:35 remaining in the game. Rush Moody scored from the 7 and Tweardy added the extra point to make the score 42-19. After one more possession from both teams ending with a fumble each Reed Daniel came up with his second interception of the night to seal the conference win for the St. John's Mavericks and a 4-0 record.
