BOWIE NO MATCH FOR MAVS IN SOUTH AUSTIN SCRAP

After St. John’s went on a 9-0 tear in the second half of the St. Mary’s Hall game, they were primed for survival mode for the next 18 hours. Two bus breakdowns later the boys in scarlet and black used the help of parents, alumni, and coaches to shuttle to the Stasney field complex in South Austin, home of the Bowie Bulldogs.
Primed for a physical battle, the Mavericks made do with the dust and hay packed turf to take a lead on Patrick Wilkey’s goal early in the first period and never trail again.
Zach Gaitz scored an unassisted goal to make it 2-1. Then the half ended on Jordan Schulers’ man down goal to make it 3-2.
Tough Maverick defense led by Henry Waller’s 15 saves, held the Bulldogs scoreless on 6 penalties in the second half including a 3 minute non-releasable foul.
Reed Daniel started the second half scoring with an assisted goal from William Young and then Daniel found Wilkey for the second goal of the half. Wilkey then got garbage as time wound down in the quarter. Young scored late in the fourth on a Daniel assist, and the Mavs found their third counter victory in as many buses to get them back home for a city showdown against the Woodlands on Tuesday night at 7:00 p.m. on Scotty Caven Field.
