Mavericks #1 in SPC South Zone with Win over Falcons
St. John's defeated Kinkaid last night 14-6 to secure the #1 seed from the South going into SPC playoffs. The win puts this young team 9-0 overall with one regular season game remaining.
The Mavericks got off to a slow start. Kinkaid would take a 1-0 lead just over a minute into the match, and it would take the Mavs a full 8 minutes until Jewett would score her first, off an assist from Hallie. Defense did a good job holding the Falcons to just two goals for the half, while attack went to work with goals from Maggie, Hallie, Alli G, Sarah, Kate and Clayto (2).
The Falcons came out of the break and not only struck first but also held the Mavs scoreless for the first 11 minutes of the half. Hallie scored the first SJS goal of the half, followed by tallies from Kate, Clemo, Gracie, Jewett and Alli G.
The Mavericks will continue to work on fundamentals of the game - smart, accurate passing; good cutting; ground balls as well as fine-tuning their transition, draw control and attack & defense within the arc. They finish up the regular season on the road at Clear Lake tomorrow. Good luck, Mavericks!
