The Mavericks opened the conference with a solid win over John Cooper. John Cooper has a very strong team, but our girls were up to the task.
Playing number 1 singles, Victoria Zhao played against Erika Olsen for the second time in less than a week. Last week Erika gave Victoria some trouble, but today Victoria played a much better match. Feeling more relaxed and hitting more through the ball than last week, Victoria basically controlled the match with powerful penetrating shots off both wings and kept Erika off balance for most of the match. Final score: Victoria 6-2 6-2.
Playing number 2 singles, Nadia Khera made quick work of Ashley Petrauskas. Being patient and waiting for the right moment to finish the point with powerful groundstrokes, Nadia finished the first set 6-0 quickly. In the second set Ashley started going for her shots and she is very powerful, but it wasn't enough to hurt Nadia. Final score: Nadia 6-0 6-4.
Playing number 3 singles, Isabella Diaz-Mira also made quick work of the same opponent she played in the final of the EHS tournament. At the EHS tournament Maria Villareal gave Isabella a much tougher match, but today Isabella knew exactly what to do from the start. Using a variety of shots and changing the pace of her shots, Isabella just kept her opponent on the run and prevailed 6-2 6-0.
Playing number 1 doubles, Ava Phan and Dalia Khera had a tougher match than expected. Our girls won the first set 6-2 without much difficulty. In the second set John Cooper changed their strategy by playing mostly from the baseline and just trying to keep the ball in play. It was an adjustment that threw off Ava and Dalia's rhythm and it worked for a while. After being down 0-3, our girls adjusted and cleaned up the unforced errors. In the end they took care of business by winning the second set 6-4. That was a very good come back.
Playing line 2 doubles, Sophia Jammar and Elizabeth Patton had another very good win. Playing a very clean match with very few unforced errors and using powerful volleys and overheads at the net, our girls completely dominated the match. Final result: Sophia and Isabella 6-2 6-0.
Emma Chang and Mia Hong won a tough match in an extra match agains two very consistent players. Our girls were down most of the match, but after being down 5-6, they adjusted and won 3 games in a row to prevail 8-6.
Today was a great win. The scores may look like it was an easy dual, but John Cooper has a very solid team and we had very competitive matches.
Well done girls.
