Laniyan Crowned Most Outstanding Wrestler

It took overtime, but  Layo Laniyan '18 scored a takedown to win 5-3 over Foti Pakes to become the first wrestler in the St. John's program to win back to back individual state crowns. He was also voted the Most Outstanding Wrestler of the Texas Prep State Wrestling Championships held at EHS.  Wesley Gow '19 also finished at the top of the podium in the 220 weight class. Eight wrestlers posted All-State performances: Laniyan, Gow, Michael Daichman '21 (120), Sebastian Jimenez '21 (126), Thomas Grannen '22 (132), Roman Lewis '19 (285), and captains Evan Hammerman '18 (170) and Dani Yan '18 (195). The Mavericks finished third overall behind champion Trinity Christian Academy and runner-up Liberty Christian School. Based on top-three finishers, SJS will be sending a program-best seven wrestlers to the National Prep Championships held at Lehigh University on February 23-24. The Mavericks are preparing for the upcoming SPC Championships hosted by St. John's on February 17.
