Embracing a Maverick Strong mentality, fall sports teams are off to a great start, but the biggest competition this fall has been beyond the courts, fields, and trails. Facing nature, a mega-Maverick team of students, parents, faculty, and alumni emerged in the wake of Hurricane Harvey. Mavericks mucked houses, provided families with non-perishable food, and pitched in wherever they could to get Houston up and running. According to Upper School Community Service Coordinator Marci Bahr, "the game is just beginning."
Despite being focused on helping the community, in athletic games and contests, St. John's Varsity Boys' Cross Country, Field Hockey, and Football are all 2-0. Girls' JV Cross Country recently won the Fort Worth Pascal Invitational held at the Athletic Performance Ranch, the site of the 2017 SPC championship races. Girls' Varsity Volleyball, on an eight-game winning streak, starts SPC play on Thursday at home against St. Stephen's. Boys' Varsity Volleyball (6-0, 2-0 SPC) plays St. Stephen's after the girls' match. On Friday Varsity Football and Field Hockey travel to ESD and St. Stephen's respectively, to begin their SPC slate of games.
They’ve been competing against rivals, records, and a runaway storm, but St. John's Mavericks always find a way to harness muscle, mind, and teamwork to meet and master the challenge in front of them.
