The Athletics Department at St John's School is pleased to announce the appointment of David Cohn as the new Boys’ Varsity Lacrosse coach effective July 1, 2016. Cohn will take the helm from Sam Chambers who is retiring from the program after 24 years.
While still early in his career, Mr. Cohn has already compiled a truly impressive lacrosse resume. Cohn played high school lacrosse at perennial national powerhouse Gilman School where the combination of his tenacity and character earned him a spot at the United States Naval Academy. Over his four years at the Naval Academy, Cohn played on some of the Midshipmen's most successful lacrosse teams including finishing runner up to Syracuse in the 2004 National championship game. David graduated from the Naval Academy in 2007 earning a Bachelor of Science with a major in Economics.
Upon graduating from the Naval Academy, David began his seven-year tour of duty in the Navy that included coaching lacrosse. His first military assignment was as a communications officer for the USS Jarrett in San Diego, CA, where he led 10 personnel in the execution of the ship's combat mission during three deployments. His next assignment, also in San Diego, was with the Mobile Security Squadron Five's Security Department. As Officer-in-Charge, Cohn led a detachment of 68 personnel in all facets of administration, training, readiness, and mission execution ensuring the highest level of war fighting readiness. While stationed in San Diego, CA, David served as the offensive coordinator for the Francis Parker School varsity lacrosse program. His final military assignment was as Fleet Training Instructor at the Surface Warfare Officers School Command in Newport, RI, where he was involved with leadership curriculum development, training, and mentoring of newly commissioned junior officers. During his time in Rhode Island, Cohn also served as the assistant lacrosse coach at the US Naval Academy Prep School. Upon completion of his naval service, Cohn departed with the rank of lieutenant.
After serving in the Navy, Cohn decided to settle in on honing his lacrosse coaching skills and followed his former Navy coach, Richie Meade, to Furman University to serve on his staff for a year. Cohn currently serves as the Offensive Coordinator of the surging Division I Falcon program at The United States Air Force Academy which is ranked 12th in the country.
Commenting on his appointment, SJS Director of Athletics Vince Arduini remarked "we are thrilled that we were able to attract a high caliber coach who is not only passionate about the game, but understands his most important role is helping our students to develop their full potential within the context of the St John's School mission." Continuing he added, "David will continue to build upon an already solid foundation within our lacrosse program and we have high hopes that his strong presence in our community will attract even greater attention to the fastest growing sport in Texas."
In addition to coaching lacrosse, David will serve as an assistant coach for the football program and teach in the SJS Physical Education Department. In the near future, the School hopes to utilize David's training by developing a leadership class for its Upper School students.
