Back-to-Back City Champs

Congratulations to the Middle School Wrestling team for winning the 2016 City Wrestling Championship.  This is the Mavericks second consecutive city title.  St. John's won the 2015 state middle school title and will look to go back-to-back at the state level next weekend. The Maverick Middle School Wrestling team recently won the St. Mark’s Wrestling tournament.
With a team of 24 wrestlers St. John’s scored 273 points to finish first out of a field of 16 teams.  Host school St. Francis Episcopal Day School placed second with 148 points.  Seven Mavericks won their weight class and another seven were runner up in all of the 14 final matches.  According to one coach, the finals were effectively a dual match between St. John’s and the Houston all-stars.  Ken Matsunaga ’21 (80), Sebastian Jimenez ’21 (106), Thomas Grannen ’20 (113), Will Skinner ’20 (126), Jack Curtin ’20Drew Woodcox ’20 (140), and Jackson Masterson ’20 (150) won their respective weight classes.  Ishan Shah ’20 (89), Michael Daichman ’21 (98), Peter Cannon ’20 (106), Cameron Howley ’20 (120), Ben Morris ’20 (162), Luke Westmark ’21 (175), and Beckett Vine ’20 (200) were all runner-up.  19 Maverick wrestlers finished first through fourth.  St. John’s will complete the 2016 season at the state championship meet on January 29-30 hosted by Allen High School.
