St. John’s Middle School Wrestling team is back from Big D with another championship title.  Last year the team won the state title in Southlake.  This past weekend the Mavericks came out on top at the 2016 St. Mark’s Middle School Wrestling Tournament.
In a field of over 300 wrestlers and 17 teams St. John’s sent 25 grapplers to the mat.  Michael Daichman ’21 (98), Thomas Grannen ’20 (113), Will Skinner ’20 (126), and Luke Westmark ’21 (175) all won their weight classes.  Cameron Howley ’20 (120), Drew Woodcox ’20 (140) were runner-up.  Sam Finney ’20 (89) and Jackson Masterson ’20 (150) placed third, while Ishan Shah ’21 (89), Peter Cannon ’20 (106), and Thomas Chang ’21 (150) finished fourth.
The Mavericks posted a first place team score of 238 points.  Lovejoy-Willow Springs was second with 209.  The closest private school was Trinity Christian at 7th place.
“We were behind Rockwall and Lovejoy most of the day,” said Head Coach Jeb Ligums.  “The 19 Maverick wrestlers who scored in the consolation brackets were the difference makers.”
The 2016 Middle School State Championships will be in Allen, Texas on January 30th.
