St. John's Girls' Golf earns second place at the 2015 SPC Championships, three strokes behind Casady.
After tying the the school record with a score of 257 on day one, the Maverick Girls' golf team, led by Monica Dao '15, Grace Wilson '17, Marion Gibson '15, Morgan Sholeen '18, and Emily Sherron '15, was tied with EHS going into the second and final day of the SPC tournament. Dao, Wilson and Gibson all scored under 90. At the end of day one the Mavericks trailed Casady by 10 strokes. As the temperatures on day two dropped at Nothgate Country Club, so did the scores for the Mavericks. Wilson fired a personal best 76, ten strokes better than her previous best round to garner all-conference honors along with Dao.
"I was pretty relaxed and I have such a love of the game and everything was just falling together one hole at a time," said Wilson. "I started off well and never lost it. I did not have a single double bogey and just stayed in it. My biggest problem is when I get away from myself thinking that if I can get par, par, par then I will shoot a good score, but after nine I knew it was good, and I played one shot at a time.
True to Head Coach Jack Soliman's words on Monday "If we can improve on our previous performance today and Casady puts up a big number then we have a chance," the Mavericks took their best shot at the Cyclones of Casady, chipping away seven strokes on the second-round scores.
"I could not be more proud of the effort of the whole team," said Head Coach Jack Soliman. "Gutting it out and grinding it out they have grown tougher throughout the season."
