Boys' Volleyball is smiling about a second place finish in the St. Mary's Hall Tournament.
Since their third place finish in the Houston Cup, the varsity is starting to find out what makes them click. Last weekend, the Mavericks finished second in the St. Mary’s Hall Tournament by defeating Episcopal (25-19, 25-14), Trinity Valley (25-12, 25-8), Casady (27-25, 22-25, 15-7), and St. Mark’s (25-17, 25-17), before losing to St. Mark’s in the finals (23-25, 17-25).
“We are feeling confident,” said co-captain Justin Bernard ’14. “Since pre-season we have taken huge strides. We were joking around early on and not sure of our identity. We thought that was a bad thing, but joking around is helping us.”
Not a laughing matter, the Mavericks recently took on University of Houston club team. Up 2-0, they lost in five.
“It was a great learning experience for the boys,” said Head Coach Mike McCrary.
“It takes a lot of focus in practice to stay confident and peak at the right time,” said Bernard, who along with the rest of the team, hopefully will be all smiles when they return from Ft. Worth and the 2013 SPC Championships.
