St. John's Girls' Varsity Volleyball team storms through the Texas Tornados tournament.
Spinning through the field, St. John’s Girls’ Volleyball picked up the Texas Tornadoes Invitational championship with ease on September 15th. Led by Caroline Labanowksi’s ’14 44 kills and Kate Bres’ ’13 90 assists, the Mavericks’ offense found its groove en route to a 5-0 sweep, a championship trophy, and a Houston Chronicle Athlete of the Week nomination.
“We came together as a team this weekend, but it will take a lot more from us to compete with teams like St. Stephen’s (2011 SPC Champions),” said Caroline Labanowski ’14.
“We are looking for a defensive test to assess our complete level of play,” said Head Coach James Fuller. “The Kinkaid match-up on Thursday should be a good indicator of where we are in the SPC.”
Scientists now have proof that tornados peak during mid-week due to more human activity, and Monday’s practice level was telling as players were working hard in pre-practice without any mention of a win over the weekend. Big numbers on offense twist half the story. Team defense is the key to compete on any day of the week and give the Mavericks a chance to hoist a heavier trophy in November.
