The story of St. John's sports is being told with a recent face lift of the SSAC. Championship posters, photos and banners tell part of the past. Be a part of the finish and submit your most memorable athletic moment to help complete the final phase of the project.
The story of St. John’s athletics comes to life on the walls of the Smith Student Athletic Center (SSAC) as photos, slogans, and banners go up to commemorate past athletic achievement. The project is ongoing, and we welcome alumni input.
Posters honoring past champions accompany photos and framed stories from each of today’s sports programs. The most recent championship posters showing in the lobby include 2011 SPC championship winners Girls’ Field Hockey, Girls’ Lacrosse (also state champions) and Boys’ Basketball; 2010 SPC champions Girls’ Track & Field, and 2010 state champions Girls’ Lacrosse. Sixteen additional championship posters are located on the lower level of the SSAC.
For the final phase of the sports showcase, the Athletic Department is taking nominations for stories from each of the 24 programs. The list so far includes1987 Boys’ Golf SPC championship win with Head Coach Stobie Whitmore '68 and number 1 golfer Mike Maggart '87, the Girls' Basketball legacy with Coach Doug Osburn at the helm of the majority of championships as well as several other inspirational tales from the archives. Sports pundits are debating the Lacrosse entries: Boys: Should it be the “Root to Root” classic or goalie Ben May’s ’02 overtime game winner? Girls: it’s a draw: the 2011 playoff win over EHS or the 2007 State championship overtime victory.
We’re looking for input about these and other all-time great Rebel remembrances and Maverick moments. If you witnessed or were a part of a significant piece of St. John's sports history, please submit your story and photo to Sam Chambers at email@example.com
