Boys' Volleyball serves up the season on Saturday, August 27th starting with their annual alumni volleyball game. The Varsity has never defeated the alumni team.
Boys' Volleyball is up to their old tricks with a new coach at the helm. As usual they start the season against the alumni. A chance to go back to high school for those grads from '11 to '77, the game has taken on an aura of braggadocio starting 15 years ago when the old ball game was introduced by former coach, Eric Lombardi. Lombardi produced so many good players that the alumni not only return to their glory days to show up, but also to keep the unbeaten streak intact.
New this year, however, is the Varsity coach. In his 17th year coaching volleyball, Coach Mike McCrary brings a Bay Area background from his college days at Foothill College, CA to Maverickville.
"I am very excited to be a part of a rich tradition in volleyball here at St. John's," said McCrary. "I am looking forward to the season and to our match-up next Saturday. Our young squad will have a chance to end the streak if the old alumni are not in very good shape and last year's graduates have already gone off to college."
Beat the Alumni and you know you have game. It’s never happened, but the closest encounter in Lombardi's last year (2009) resulted in a trip to the SPC finals. Coach Amason's 2010 bunch put up a good fight last season, but the old guys still rule.
Please contact Coach McCrary and challenge him and the Mavericks to "Tweak the Streak," on Saturday, August 27th, 10:00 a.m. on Liu Court.
