Girls' Lacrosse takes takes the crown against cross-town rival Episcopal 8-7 in the the SPC Championship game!
After rolling by St. Stephen's and St. Andrew's of Austin on day one of SPC, the Girls' Lacrosse team faces Houston Episcopal in Fort Worth for the SPC Championship.
EHS won the regular season game 14-7, but the Mavericks bumped the Knights out of the City playoffs on 4/20 by a 1 goal margin to earn a spot in the upcoming State tournament.
St. John's has ruled the roost in SPC and State since the leagues began, yet the Knights are a team on the rise having won the 2010 SPC title over St. John's.
The Knights jumped out to an early first half lead and held a 3-2 advantage going into the half. Episcopal scored the first goal of the second period and looked to be on their way for a repeat SPC champion, but St. John's held on with stellar goalie play from Kelsey Duncombe-Smith ('11) and offensive bursts from Sarah Urdahl ('12), Jessica Carroll ('11) (3 goals), Grace Dennis ('11), Amanda Leavell ('13), and Caroline Gibson ('11).
The score was knotted up at 5 midway through the second half and then the Mavericks took the lead for good with Robby Rybarczyk ('13) scoring the eventual game winner.
The Knights found the net 2 more times and got their last score with 2 seconds remaining. "I am so proud of this team," said Head Coach Angie Kensinger. "They have come together, fought through adversity, and believed in each other."
Kensinger led the Mavericks to the State title last year despite falling to the Knights in the SPC championship game. She coached St. John's to SPC titles in '02, '04, '05, '06, '08, and '09 in addition to State titles in '97, '98, '99, '05, '06, '07, and '10.
