Led by the feet of Drew Woodcox, St. John's Mavericks 7th grade football squad finished with a tie in a battle of unbeaten teams.
After a scoreless first half in a game between two unbeaten 7th grade teams, host Second Baptist Eagles got on the board midway through the third period to take a 6-0 lead. St. John's answered on the ensuing kick off return with a touchdown on the feet of Drew Woodcox to make it 6-6 (PAT failed).
Early in the fourth period Woodcox used his feet again to score, this time with a field goal to give St. John's a 9-6 lead.
The Eagles responded with their second touchdown of the game to go ahead 12-9 with three minutes to go in the game.
The Mavericks settled for a short kick off return to get the ball at their own 40. Against the wind, clock, and odds to stay unbeaten, St. John's still had the confidence to score based on their practice routines which began in August.
Solid blocking and a key first down put the Mavericks in Eagle territory with a less than minute to go. On the next play, Will McKone found Thomas Grannen for a 20 yard pass gain to put the ball near the 30 with seven seconds on the clock.
After a timeout the Mavericks sent out the PAT team, a group which has a daily practice routine led by Coach Jeb Ligums. Blocking (line), snap (Jack Curtin), and hold (Will McKone) were to perfection, and Woodcox's kick sailed through the uprights as time expired for a 12-12 tie, just like they drew it up.
