Mavs Girls' Basketball crowned Houston Christian Champs, Leavell named Tournament MVP

After going 3 and 0 in "pool play", the St. John Mavericks advanced to the championship game Saturday evening to compete against the host school and SPC opponent, Houston Christian.  "Pool play"  consisted of victories against Pope John XXIII (41 -12) on Thursday evening, St. Dominic Savio of Austin (44 - 37) Friday evening and, Incarnate Ward Academy (47 - 27) Saturday afternoon.

A hard fought battle to the end, the Mavs beat the Mustangs 35 to 26 with everyone making significant contributions.  Tournament Most Valuable Player, Amanda Leavell, scored 8 points and added 6 rebounds and 6 steals.  Isabelle Metz, also named to the All-Tournament Team, hit two big 3's to score a game high 10 points.  Caroline Labanowski had a great tournament and a great championship game.  She scored 6 points, shooting 4 for 4 from the free throw line to go along with her 9 rebounds and 3 blocks.  Jane Labanowski, also having a great tournament, added 4 points, 10 rebounds, and 2 blocks for the Mavericks.  Briana Williams led the team with 6 defensive rebounds and averaged over 10 rebounds/game for the tournament.  The remainder of the team, Chloe Francis, Sarah Gow, Celia Lewis and Helene Snyder all played integral roles in the team's victory.
