The Mavericks open the SPC conference season with a decisive win over the Greenhill Hornets. Hitting on all cylinders the Mavericks get out to a quick start and never look back as they cruise to a 62-7 victory. The game started with St. John's Dan Tweardy kicking off to the Hornets from Dallas and Eric Hobby getting down the field in a hurry to make the tackle inside the twenty yard line at the 17. Jack Craddock and Ben Griffin then stop the Hornets and force them to punt on a 4th and 5. The Mavericks then take over from their own 39 and proceed to march down the field with the trio of Nathan Avery, Dan Tweardy, and Chris Gow toting the pigskin. Tweardy finishes it off with a 12 yard run and also tacks on the extra point and the Mavs jump out to a 7-0 lead. On Greenhills next series the SJS defense holds with a three and out and Ben Griffin comes up with a 28 yard punt return to give the Mavs a short field at the Greenhill 28. Waisting no time the Mavs take it down to the one and Chris Gow puts it in for the 14-0 lead. The Mavs get another score before the second quarter with a twenty yard run from Dan Tweardy to make it 21-0. Early in the second Tweardy does it again going 46 yards this time for the TD and a 28-0 score. Greenhill fights back putting together a 15 play drive only to be halted by the Mavs defense on a 4th and 1 at the SJS 15. St. John's then takes over to run the clock out in the first half. The 3rd quarter begins with Ben Griffin returning the Hornet kickoff 49 yards to the Greenhill 30 and on the first play Chris Gow takes it into the endzone for the 30 yard rush. The PAT is wide right and the Mavericks are up 34-0. Another 4th down stop by the defense with plays from Grayson Crady, Walt Baker, Ben Griffin, John Michael Jones, and Wain Wanguri and the offense takes over again. Nathan Avery gets the score this time with a 6 yard rush to make it 41-0. On Greenhills next possession Wes Wallace steps in front of a pass for an interception and returns the ball to the Greenhill 25. Chris Gow then takes it in running over the Hornet defenders for a 19 yard score to close the third quarter with the Mavs up 48-0. Greenhill makes another attempt to get the ball into the endzone but Jonathan Newar comes up with the Mavs second interception with a great play in the endzone. Wes Wallace takes over at QB and on the second play hands off to Jake Askew who bursts up the middle and goes 75 yards with a serpentine run for a score. Lee Lazear comes in to add the extra point for a 55-0 score. The Mavs last score comes after a fourth down stop by the defense with Robby Smith, Daren Napier and Jake Askew making plays. Wain Wanguri finishes the scoring with a 4 yard run and Lazear making good on the kick attempt 62-0. Greenhill finishes the game with an 8 play 80 yard drive to to keep the Mavs from their third straight shutout.
