Houston Christian Game

The Houston Christian Mustangs win the toss and defer to the second half which usually means the Mavericks will receive. But on the opening kickoff the Mustangs elect to go for an onside kick in which they recovered giving them first possession. The Mavericks did not let the surprise get to them as the defense proceeded to hand Houston Christian a three and out giving up zero yards on the three plays. The punt from the Mustangs went out of bounds pinning the Mavs on their own 7 yard line. St. John's was able to drive the ball down to the Mustangs 38 but could not convert on a 3rd and 9 forcing a punt. The punt snap then sailed over the head of Dan Tweardy who retrieved the errant snap but was only able to run the ball a few yards before the Mustang rush tackled him on the St. John's 40. But the defense again came through and forced a fumble in which Wes Wallace recovered giving the ball back to the Mavericks. The offense then took charge and got the ball rolling with a 9 play 70 yard drive highlighted by a 26 yard pass from Chris Gow to Risher Randall for the score and a 7-0 lead. The Mustangs returned Tweardys kickoff 31 yards to their 48 yard line giving them good field position. After a pass interference call the Mustangs had a 1st and 10 on the SJS 38. The defense showing no mercy held for three downs and Houston Christian made the decision to go for a 4th and 7 but after a completion in the flats Morgan Bernard came up quickly with a perfect form tackle to stop the receiver in his tracks and spoiling the 4th down conversion. The Mavericks took over on their own 31 and again proceeded to take the ball down the field going 69 yards in 8 plays with Dan Tweardy taking it in for the score on a 33 yard scamper to increase the Mavs lead to 14-0 going into the second quarter. On the ensueing kickoff Tweardy puts the ball in the end zone for a touchback and the Mustangs start form their own 20. The defense showing their domination with another three and out forced a punt in which Risher Randall fielded with a fair catch. The offense waisted no time taking the ball 40 yards with Nathan Avery finishing the drive with a one yard score to increase the SJS lead to 21-0. The rest of the first half was more of the same the defense holding the Mustangs to minimal yardage and the SJS offense making good on two more drives with a 10 yard score by Dan Tweardy and a 15 yard score by Chris Gow which was setup with an interception by John Michael Jones to make the score at the half 35-0.
The Mavericks came out the second half with more of the same stopping the Mustangs on their first possession then taking the ball 61 yards in ten plays for another score with Nathan Avery putting it in from the three and a 42-0 score. Chris Gow tacked on another score at the end of the third quarter with a 10 yard jaunt to make the score 49-0. In the fourth quarter the Mustangs put together a drive aided by an SJS face mask penalty having a 1st and 10 at the 11 yard line. But the Maverick defense dug in and Sam Oliver, Robby Smith, Grayson Crady, Wain Wanguri, Will Griffin and Eric Hobby keep the Mustangs in check holding them on a 4th and 1 from the 2 yard line. The Mavs then took over with Wes Wallace running the show at QB and went 98 yards finishing with a 44 yard run by Jonathan Newar for the final score of the night 55-0. The shut out was preserved when Sam Oliver sacked the Houston Christian QB on the last play of the game.
