Mavericks aka Cubans take the Crown in Dramatic Fashion

The Mavericks capped off an incredible season today by winning the City Championship in an exciting, hard fought and emotional game against cross-town rival Kinkaid. The Mavs struck early with a goal from Charlotte Iupe in the second minute of the game to take the lead. Kinkaid was able to even the score before half-time. The second half was a dog fight from start to finish as each team pressed and kept the fans on constant edge. With 8 minutes left in regulation time, Catherine Franklin intercepted a Kinkaid pass in the midfield, dribbled to just inside the 25' line to rocket a shot toward the Falcon goal. The goalie was in position for the save, but Caroline Dawson, as she has done so many times in practice, got a stick on the ball in front of the goalie and deflected Franklin's shot, rocketing it into the upper left hand netting of the goal - a truly spectacular go ahead goal! The final 8 minutes were 480 seconds of nail biting back and forth action. As regulation time ended, Kinkaid was awarded two short corners in a last attempt to even the score, but the indomitable Maverick defense held tight, as it has done all year, to earn the victory and the Championship crown. Kudos to Charlotte Iupe for her goal and for playing all out with an injury; to Catherine Franklin (aka Batherine Branklin) on an incredible assist and for controlling the midfield; to Caroline Dawson on her picture perfect goal deflection; to Lauren Wilson who had several difficult saves and who kept cool under constant pressure; to Katharine Romfelt, also injured, on a great game and her second individual save of the season; to her defensive cohorts Joan Scheirman and Hayden Foutch all of whom worked together as an impenetrable force all year long with Janie Wilde, Lauren Mellor-Crummey and Margaret Mauel to rack up 8 season shutouts; to Olivia Herbert and Paige Hawley on their constant enthusiasm and tireless efforts all season which culminated in a great game today; to Hannah Baker with her goal in the semi's and constant hard work on the post; to Daisy Wolf, Susan Frost, Annie Gallay and Catherine Padhi, all who stepped in at critical times to keep the pressure on the Falcons; to Alex Gandle, Cici Hedgpeth, Katina Ballantyne, Liliana Varman, Isobel Pribil, Sarah Burkett, Jennifer Lewis, Meagan Longoria and Maura Lindsay for their team contributions and sideline support today, without which the team would not been the cohesive unit of "Cubans" that earned their way not only into the finals, but fought and earned their way to a dramatic victory today, giving them the deserved right to proclaim themselves City Champs... Congratulations to all!!! REPRESENT, REPRESENT..... CUBA !!!
