Mavericks Run Amok Over Awty Imternational

Harold Graham
The St. John's Maverick's JV Boys' Tennis squad returned to action after its extended Spring Break, running amok over the Rams of the Awty International School.
13 netters traveled to the Awty campus north of the Katy Freeway, off of North Post Oak to their four court tennis complex on a bright and windy afternoon made more raucous by the track meet next door.
Three lines of singles and five lines of doubles were scheduled.
First onto our two courts were the doubles team of Nicholas Echeverri and Naveen Krishnan and William Urdahl in singles. Showing little signs of rust, Nic and Naveen cruised to a two break win while William made his one service break stand in a very workmanlike 6-4 win.
Doubles play continued with the tandems of Ryan Chang/Raunak Kundagrami and Vivek Kapur/Andy Tockman. Both teams showed little ill effects of the nearly two week layoff by showing superiority on the big points with Ryan and Raunak prevailing 6-2 and Vivek and Andy garnering a 6-1 victory.
Next onto the court were the freshmen duos of Will Heilmann/Asher Moll and Thomas Goodgame/Brinkley Morse. Maintaining the pressure on the opposition established by the previous Maverick lines, both lines prevailed with 6-2 scores.
Unfortunately, due to lack of time and opposing players, Eli Maierson and Julian Westerfield did not get to play their singles matches.
What were the takeaways, you might ask.
1. The rust fell off pretty quickly as we accelerate into our second half of the season featuring 10 matches over five weeks.
2. The emphasis placed on consistency, positional play, moving forward judiciously, and finishing points were all on display.
3. Continued focus on serves and return of serve and the playing of situational tennis are works in progress and will be featured in our upcoming practices along with intra squad match play.

Next dual match on the docket is this Thursday, March 23, against Houston Episcopal at the Downtown Club at the Met with a 4:00 PM start. Come on out and watch the boys battle.

Until then, go Mavericks!
