Kinkaid Game

Not only was it the Kinkaid game but the SPC Championship was on the line as both teams were undefeated in conference play. The Mavericks Dan Tweardy teed the ball up to start the game and the Falcons returned to start the first possession on their own 26. St. John's defense took control right off the bat as John Michael Jones made the tackle on the first play for a one yard loss. On the next play Jack Craddock stepped in front of the receiver for an incomplete pass then Douglas Berkman grabbed an interception and returned it to the Kinkaid 31. With the momentum from the defense the Maverick offense went to work and moved the ball to the three after a clutch run by Dan Tweardy to get a first down at 4th and 6th. Tweardy then put the ball in the endzone with a three yard run and kicked the extra point to put the Mavs up 7-0. Tweardy booted the ensueing kickoff to the goal line but the Falcons were able to get a good return into SJS territory at the 49. After a few good plays by Kinkaid they were able to work the ball down to the 23. The Maverick defense then made a few good plays themselves with tight secondary coverage and the Falcons were facing 3rd and 10. Unfortunately on the next play they connected on a 22 yard pass down to the one and a first and goal. On the second QB sneak Kinkaid crossed the goal line and the score was tied 7-7. The Mavericks finished the first quarter on their next drive with some steady runs by Chris Gow and Nathan Avery then after three plays of the same in the start of the second and controlling the ball to the KHS 35 the Mavs put the ball on the ground with an errant pitch that put themselves in a hole facing a fourth and 30. Tweardy dropped back to punt giving the ball to the Falcons on their 27. Kinkaid then took advantage of the SJS mistake and proceeded to go 73 yards in 11 plays to go up 7-13 after missing the extra point attempt. The next two drives for both teams ended in punts and the Mavericks had one last shot before half. Converting a fourth and 4 with Gow connecting on a pass to Wes Wallace for 17 yards the Mavs ran out of time and went into half time down by 6.
St. John's received the kickoff to start the second half and Risher Randall got the return for 14 yards. Avery  broke the first play for 8 yards but after two penalties and two incoplete passes the Mavericks were forced to punt. The defense again came through and held with Berkman and Craddock leading the charge and Alexander Saucer picking up a sack forcing a punt by the Falcons. The Maverick offense started the series picking up a couple of first downs but then another penalty and a sack halted the drive and forcing a punt. The Falcons took over at their own 36 and put together a 64 yard drive to end the third quarter with a lead fo 7-21. Ben Griffin returned the kickoff 27 yards and the Maverick offense needed to get going. After getting a fist down and moving the ball to the KHS 43 the offense stalled and was looking at a fourth down and six. The decision to go for it did not turn out as the Falcons were able to hold giving them the ball on their own 42. They then proceeded to mount a drive for the 58 yards to finish all scoring and preserve the win by a score of 7-28.
