Concordia Lutheran

The Mavericks fell behind early in the first quarter 0-20 due to some costly turnovers. St. John's then settled down and matched up with a very good Crusader team but the early deficit proved to be too much for the Mavericks.

SJS won the toss and elected to receive. Ben Griffin then took the opening kickoff out to the 34 and the offense ran onto the field. But on the second play from scrimmage QB Chris Gow and FB Jake Askew mishandled the exchange and Concordia recovered the loose ball at the SJS 42. The Crusaders on their second play threw a short pass which turned into a 36 yard touchdown after a missed tackle and after the PAT took an early 7 point lead. SJS second possession started on their own 20. After two plays and a penalty the Mavs were facing a 3rd and 14 at their own 16 yard line. Then Gow hit Risher Randall for a 14 yard pass and a Maverick first down. The next three plays left the Mavs facing a 4th and 3 sending Dan Tweardy back to punt the ball away. The Crusaders then put together an 11 play drive converting a 4th and 6 and getting some help with a crucial face mask penalty to go 74 yards for their second score and a 0-14 lead with 2 minutes left in the 1st quarter. SJS next possession started on their own 20 and at 3rd and 7 from the 23 QB Chris Gow was blind sided causing a fumble and recovery by Concordia on the SJS 14 yard line. Two plays later the Mavericks found themselves behind 0-20 at the end of the first quarter.The second quarter was back and forth with both teams playing tough until the Mavericks coughed the ball up for the third time giving the Crusaders another chance before half in which they were able to get the ball in the endzone for a 0-26 halftime lead.

The second half started with the Mavericks defense forcing Concordia to punt on their first possession giving SJS the ball on thier own 41 yard line after a good return from Ben Griffin. The offense then converted on a 4th and 1 moving the ball to the Crusader 49. The next play Gow handed off to Dan Tweardy who broke through for a 49 yard scamper to the endzone and the Mavericks were on the board with 6:05 in the third 7-26. The rest of the quarter both teams broke even. Going into the fourth was much of the same until St. John's on their own 42 threw a swing pass that was deflected causing a fumble in which the Mavs were able to recover but was now facing a 2nd down and 36 from their own 19 which turned into a 4th and 24 at the 31. After a Tweardy punt Concordia started at thier 46 ran a couple of plays to the Maverick 38 before breaking a 38 yard run for a score and a 7-32 lead. St. John's was still battling and took their next possession 87 yards finishing with a Gow to Randall pass from the 10 for the final score. Dan Tweardy tacked on the extra point and the game finished with the Mavs coming up short 14-32.
