The Mavericks knew they'd be in for a tough game when they hit the road to the Woodlands on Wednesday afternoon. The Highlanders were primed for an early-season upset. At pre-game, the Mavs were challenged to play through mistakes, mishaps and plain-old nice play from the other team. They were also encouraged to give a boost to a team-mate at least once during the game. What resulted was a great team effort, a fun game to be part of, a solid win for the Mavericks!
As expected, the game was close, with the lead changing several times in the first half. The Mavericks went into halftime with a 7-5 advantage and were determined to keep their mental focus in the second half. It was rewarding to see so many players step up and finish strong: Robby, SCordill and Urdahl on draw controls; Lily on D...and her pump-up message for the last 10 minutes; AB, Grace and Gibby on attack; Jess...being Jess; Duncan leading the D, getting her third blocked FPS in as many games; Amanda coming up with a key block and takeaway; Alexa thwarting a late-game fast break by the Woodlands' senior captain. All of this and more led to a strong finish, as the Mavs tallied the final three goals of the game, held their opponents scoreless for the final seven minutes of the game; and walked away with a well-earned 16-11 victory.
This team is loaded with potential. We look forward to the amazing competition we will face in Florida this weekend. Let's get to work and have some fun!
