Whittle Shuts the Door and Flores Nails Game Winner on Kingwood

Sam Chambers
St. John's goes 4-3 overall and 2-2 in district play with a win over the Kingwood Mustangs under the lights in Kingwood Wednesday night.
William Payne struck first for the Mavericks and an early lead that vanished quickly to a 2-1 deficit until Walker Hobby set the tone for the night.
Hobby's break at the 10 minute mark in the second period set up one of Zach Gaitz's two goals that kept the Mavs even or ahead of the Mustangs for the rest of the game.  Jordan Schuler struck next assisted by Reed Daniel, and Daniel followed with a score of his own to make it 4-2 Mavericks at the half.
Caldwell Flores got on board next assisted by Schuler and then Schuler returned the favor from another Daniel feed.  Gaitz got the last of the 3rd period spree of goals to give the Mavericks a 7-5 lead.
The hometown Mustangs made another run and tied it up with 7:12 to go, but goalie Nate Whittle and a stingy defense led by John Ytterberg, kept the Mustangs out of the net and Flores got the game winner with 4:34 remaining.
William Jewett added insurance late with his lone goal of the night.
