St. John's Boys' Lacrosse notched their first SPC win of the season over St. Mary's Hall after Baltimore's own baron of lacrosse pays visit.
Things were not as they seemed leading up to Friday's first SPC counter against St. Mary's Hall, once the powerhouse of the state and Central division arch rival of the Rebels. The buzz of Barons coming to town has lost its luster, but the Mavericks were motivated by other means to get back on track. Coming off a two game losing streak, St. John's showed up to practice on Thursday not in their normal routine. On the west end of Finnegan Field a crowd was building around the restraining line. Players from the middle school teams were gazing at shots being fired past 8th grade goalie, William Trieschman. Behind the back shots hit the corners, called out pipes were pinging, and the safety net was quivering in the presence of what some would say is the one of best players of the game. Varsity starter, Nate Whittle, rescued Trieschman, but shots still hit the the net with deft precision as more high school players arrived in awe whispering "is that who I think it is?" With their focus on the what some consider to be one of the best players of all time, the woes of Wednesday's loss were all forgotten. Kyle Harrison, Hopkins legendary #18, was standing in front of the program answering questions to the crowd while sending in cruise missiles that made the net explode in a puffs of dust. Harrison, on loan from STX, Nike, and Southswell Sports, finished his display by launching a 50 yard shot to the opposite goal with the same result...nothing but corner net. #18 vanished as quickly as he appeared but his mystique lingered on the next day, when the Mavs finally took the field against St. Mary's Hall. Zach Gaitz, who went 1 for 10 against TWHS on Wednesday, went 5 for 6 against SMH and had 2 assists. Reed Daniel also scored 5 goals and Jordan Schuler totaled 6 points (3/3). Parker Schiffer, Jonathan Newar, and Chris Gow scored their first goals of the season, while Caldwell Flores, William Jewett, William Payne, John Ytterberg, and Douglas Berkman added an assist apiece. Berkman also scored twice. It was all Mavericks from the first whistle, leading 7-0 at the end of the first and 11-0 at half time. The Barons scored once on Robin Doody, but the substitute net minder made his first save of the year minutes later. St. John's hosts Memorial High School on Monday night at 7:00 p.m. on Scotty Caven Field, and hopefully Harrison's legacy will linger on.
