The Mavericks ran at the Kinkaid practice meet on Thursday, October 8. There was much speculation as to how many teams would show up. Initially, all thought it was going to be a dual between the Mavericks and the Falcons. Then First Baptist showed up, so we thought we were looking at a tri meet. And then the British School showed up. At that point, we decided we would just go with the flow.
The course was very similar to the Ramble course—hilly and grassy.
The boys ran first. The line was crowded. As instructed, the Mavericks took off at the start at a sprint. Apparently, the pace didn’t ease up very much.
Xavier Gonzalez was the first Maverick to cross the finish line. (Only two boys from the British School were in front of him, but since they’re in high school, they don’t count.) Xavier’s time was a blazing 8:56. He reached his season goal of breaking 9 minutes. Luke Kramer ran 9:11. Jake Peacock ran 9:33. Max Melcher ran 9:34. Frank Spence and Ben Beiser ran 9:44. Daniel Bland ran 10:21. Alex Cherches ran 10:26. Matthew Davis ran 10:42. Juan Philippe ran 10:53. Jeffrey Fastow ran 10:57. Santi Henning ran 11:01. Joseph Caplan ran 11:05. William Clutterbuck ran 11:08. Jonathan Chen ran 11:09. Shehzad Charania ran 12:16. Evan Friedman ran 12:38. Parker Donaldson ran 12:58. And Noah Flowers ran 14:16.
Almost all of the boys improved their times on the course by at least 20 seconds, some by significantly more!
The girls ran next. It turns out it was a Maverick v Falcon Throw Down Show Down. Seven red singlets lined up next to 5 purple ones. The gun went off and so did our Mavericks. Mary Harvey turned in a blistering time of 10:08. We will be looking for her to break that 10-minute mark soon! Helen Galli ran 11:33. Jennifer Melcher ran 11:47. Maren Flood ran 11:55. Martha Jamail ran 13:27. Zoe Margolis ran 13:32. And Miranda Hurtado-Ramos ran 14:30.
All the girls improved their times significantly, from 28 seconds on up to close to 3 minutes.
Congratulations to all of our athletes! Not to brag or anything, but had the races been scored, we would have won both. We are indeed looking good for the remainder of the season. Also, we are looking forward to 8th grader Alezeh Rauf to rejoin to pack for the end of the season and add her strength to the girls’ team.
The Mavericks have two more meets this season. The Maverick Ramble on Saturday, October 17 and the HJPC Meet on Tuesday, October 27. This bunch of athletes is hard working and dedicated, and they are getting faster by the week. Stay tuned!
