St. John's Mavericks traveled to South Campus to take on their old rival, Lamar High School. There was a time when the Rebels and the Redskins would walk the same block to the game. The rivalry dates back to 1987 when both schools merged as the first club team in the Lone Star State. In 1988 the schools would form their own teams and the rivalry began with victories going back and forth within the 098 zip code and on the road at State. St. John's owns the unofficial head to head match ups at 28-10-1, and it was in their favor last night at Flores Field on South Campus, miles from the block.
Lamar looked to be the spoiler going up 2-0 early in the first period. Nick Golden scored first for the Redskins followed by Atkinson's goal off a loose ball. Patrick Wilkey got the Mavs on the board from a Reed Daniel assist and Caldwell Flores stuck an unassisted goal minutes later. Zach Gaitz found William Jewett and Wilkey got his second goal to get the Mavericks up 4-2 at the quarter. Daniel scored again and Flores finished his shot for a 6-2 half time lead.
Golden and Atkinson each scored another goal for Lamar, but St. John's pulled away with a Gaitz goal and another assist to Wilkey. Daniel and Peter Crain added two more, and Kyle Sparks assisted Jewett for the final goal of the game.
Will Wallace led the Mavericks with 6 gb's, Henry Waller had 7 saves on the night, and the Mavericks outshot the Redskins 40-15.
