A month ago, the Mavericks played the Dragons in the Holiday Tournament. Both teams were rusty, neither team shot particularly well, and John Cooper beat St. John's by three points. On Tuesday night, both teams came into the contest undefeated in zone play, both teams battled with intensity, and neither team was willing to concede. The Mavericks took their defense to a new level and finished the first quarter with a 5-0 lead. True, the offense was not stellar, but one quarter down, three to go. Both teams settled in a bit more in the second quarter and began to hit some shots, although nothing came easy. St. John's headed to the locker room with an 18-8 lead. The second half was exciting, to say the least. Most basketball games have runs -- teams going on scoring spurts changing the momentum of the game. And to win this key south zone game, the Mavericks had to endure a huge run by the Dragons. To win, players had to make plays and help the team win. And win they did.
Friday at 5pm, the Falcons come to Liu Court. The most important game for any team is the next one on the schedule. This game is no exception. Thirty-two minutes, one quarter at a time, one play at a time. Come see this team of twelve compete.
