Technical Theater Assistant (starting August 2023)

St. John’s is seeking a talented and knowledgeable Technical Theater Assistant to contribute to the overall success of the Fine Arts Department. In addition to relevant experience and a strong educational background, successful candidates must demonstrate a passion for working with Lower, Middle, and Upper School students and a commitment to developing the whole child and furthering the School’s mission, including its strategic initiatives on community and inclusion. The Technical Theater Assistant reports to the Theater Manager/Technical Director and requires after-school, evening, and weekend hours.
Primary Responsibilities:
Assist in the construction of sets for Lower, Middle, and Upper School productions
Carry out design and technical implementation set forth by the Theater Manager/Technical Director, and Directors for theater, music, and dance productions
Provide technical support for all activities in performance spaces, including student assemblies and programs
Organize performance spaces and theater shop area, as well as help identify and maintain all safety aspects of these areas.
Regularly attend weekend crew calls and supervise Johnnycake student members
Attend designer runs, technical rehearsals, and additional rehearsals as needed
Assist the technical director, scenic designer, and artistic director in the development of desired products for productions
Support theater presentations by assisting in the set up of stage units, directing the placement and rigging of scenery, and supervising the dismantling and storage of stage units following the production
Possess strong organizational skills and an ability to set priorities and work independently to meet project deadlines
Communicate effectively to build and maintain collaborative and collegial relationships with members of the Fine Arts Department and the broader school community
Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts or related field
Minimum of 3 years of experience in technical theater production
