St. John’s Mavericks Girls’ (6-1) and Boys’ (5-1) Tennis teams finish SPC South Zone competition on Thursday versus Awty. Recently, St. John's made their mark at two tough UIL tournaments.
Prior to spring break, St. John’s made the grade at the Lone Star Spring Classic Varsity UIL double-elimination tournament hosted by Manvel, Shadow Creek and Alvin High Schools. For the Girls team, Victoria Zhao won the A singles, Hannah Chang & Ava Phan won A doubles, and Dalia Khera & Kate Lu won the Girls A consolation doubles. St. John’s Boys’ also won the A doubles division with Ryan Wood and Kieran Coffey. William Sanders, Russell Li, and Hamzah Mir competed in singles while Richard Liang/Natasha Janssens and Maxx Shearod/Isabella O'Reilly put up solid performances in mixed doubles. Matt Johnston/Keval Shah were also in doubles.
The Mavericks went back to the big stage this past weekend at the UIL Kemah Boardwalk Tennis Invitational with the compass draw brackets starting in the round of 32. Nadia Khera took home 2nd place in the Girl’s Championship Singles, and the doubles team of Hannah Chang & Ava Phan won 3rd place in the Girl’s Championship Doubles. Isabella Diaz-Mira was 8th in singles and Dalia Khera/Charlotte Papeians de Morchoven finished 9th in doubles. William Sanders finished 9th overall in the singles draw and the doubles team of Wood/Coffey finished 8th. George Caldwell/Keval Shah ended up 13th in doubles and Russell Li finished 15th in singles, while Harrison Blanton won his last match for 31st place. In mixed doubles, Mia Hong/Matt Johnston were 16th and Emma Chang/Richard Liang finished 23rd. Overall, St. John's Girls' and Boys' teams combined finished 4th out of 16 teams, behind Seven Lakes, Memorial and Clements.
