Girls Varsity Tennis still undefeated

James Chang
It was a busy Match Week for the Mighty Maverick Girls’ Varsity Tennis Team playing three matches in two days at the Lost Forest Tennis Club.

In the first match, the Team easily defeated St. Andrews out of Austin 5-0.  Victoria Zhao dominated in a 6-0 6-0 win playing line 1 singles.  Playing line 2 singles, Isabella Diaz, a sophomore new to the Team this year, had little trouble against her opponent winning 6-1 6-0.  Another new addition to the Team, freshman Nadia Khera, easily won her line 3 singles match 6-0 6-0.   Hannah Chang (captain) and Ava Phan continued to show their winning ways by defeating their opponent 6-0 6-0 at line 1 doubles.  Playing line 2 doubles, Charlotte Papeians and Dalia Khera were never really tested in their 6-0 6-0 victory.

Next up was St. Stephens School, who also traveled from Austin to play the Team.  Coach Zeze continued to experiment with different combinations of lineups, as the Team easily rallied to defeat St. Stephens 5-0.  Nadia Khera played line 1 singles and defeated a pesky opponent 6-0 6-1.  Hannah Chang (captain) was victorious in her line 2 singles match 6-2 2-1 (retired).  Dalia Khera continued the team’s dominance by winning 6-0 6-1 playing line 3 singles.  The line 1 doubles team of Isabella O’Reilly (captain) and Victoria Zhao easily won their match 6-0 6-0.  Competing at line 2 doubles, Natasha Jannsens and Isabella Diaz extended the team’s victorious proclivities by easily defeating their opponent 6-0 6-0.

The team’s final match of the week was against a formidable team from John Cooper School.  Playing short-handed, the Team recorded a magnificent 5-1 match victory with many of the girls playing multiple matches.  Nadia Khera won a highly competitive, come-from-behind match 5-7 6-3 10-7 at line 1 singles.  Hannah Chang (captain) dropped a long and grueling match 2-6 5-7 playing line 2 singles.  Ava Phan had little trouble with her opponent winning 6-0 6-3 at line 3 singles.  The doubles team of Charlotte Papeians and Dalia Khera were dominant at line 1 doubles winning their match 6-2 6-3.  Isabella O’Reilly (captain) and Ava Phan continued the Team’s winning trend at line 2 doubles beating their opponent 6-3 6-1.  Team captains, Hannah Chang and Isabella O’Reilly, teamed up to finish a long evening of tennis with a convincing 6-0 6-0 victory at line 3 doubles.

The daily grind and creative coaching continues to pay off as the Team is off to impressive 4-0 start for the 2021 tennis season.
