Mavericks race to 6th place on a muddy Norbuck course
Hook
Kudos to our Greenhill crew this weekend who encountered their first experience with less than ideal racing conditions this Fall. We were delayed several times by thunder storms and the course was definitely slowed by the extremely muddy conditions, especially in the trails. With a limited warm up, our first team of Fish, Gadgil, Watkins and Hulme finished 6th overall with a time of 43:41. Our second team finished 16th overall w/ a time of 47:04 and our third team finished 24th in a time of 49:44. Our three top finishers posted excellent times even w/ the less than ideal conditions. Freshman Emily Watkins ran a gutsy third leg for her team and moved our team up several positions before handing off to Melissa Hulme. Melissa took the glove with a decisive start and rocketed our team forward among the competition. Melissa ran a great leg and pushed to an exciting finish, crossing the line right next to the 5th place finisher from Chapel Hill. Sophomore, Kaleta Johnson posted the third best time for the Mavericks running for the St. John's second team. Other notable performances were contributed by Nisha Gadgil in her first cross country race, posting the fourth best time for the Mavericks. Catherine Johnson, in her first Greenhill relay, ran the second leg for our second team which initially lead the Maverick attack. Amy Fish overcame difficult terrain without spikes, to run a time that was the smallest spread on our team from her previous Greenhill PR. The mavericks are looking to continue their drive toward an 8th SPC championship in November. This race kicks off the season, setting the stage for the Mavericks 2004 season; a season to be filled with effort and commitment toward achieving personal records in order to drive the team to achieve great success at SPC.
