The Mavs jump on the Eagles right off the bat and never let up. Ben Griffin returns the opening kickoff 84 yards for the first score while Dan Tweardy tacks on the extra point and the Mavericks lead 7-0 with only 18 seconds into the first quarter. The defense answers stopping Second Baptist with a three and out on their first possession. St. John's then strikes again with a 7 play 58 yard drive capped by a 12 yard run by Nathan Avery for the score. Tweardy added the point after and the Mavs are up 14-0. The Eagles moved the ball on their next possession but coughed it up on the SJS 28 yard line and Wes Wallace recovered. St. John's took over but was forced to punt with a 4th and 8. Tweardy booted a 47 yarder and the Eagles took over at their own 20. Again the defense gave no ground and SBS was forced to punt. Ben Griffin called for the fair catch and the Mavericks took over at their own 31. The SJS offense went to work with Chris Gow, Dan Tweardy, and Nathan Avery churning up yardage. Avery finished the 8 play drive with his 2nd score a 2 yard plunge into the endzone. Tweardy's kick was good and the Mavs were up 21-0 with 9:36 in the second quarter. Second Baptist started their next drive on their own 20 after Tweardys kick went into the endzone. The Eagles were then able to run 16 plays before the Maverick defense led by Jack Craddock, Alexander Saucer, Daren Napier, Wes Wallace, Ben Griffin, John Michael Jones, Wain Wanguri, Douglas Berkman, Moragn Bernard, Kory Haywood, Will Griffin, and Grayson Crady shut them down four straight plays with a 1st and goal at the 9 to end the half.
The second half started like the first half ended with the defense dominating the eagles with another three and out forcing the punt. After the fair catch by Ben Griffin the offense waisted no time and on their second play Chris Gow connected with Dan Tweardy on a swing pass and Tweardy making a couple of moves took off for the endzone with a 45 yard run increasing the Mavericks lead to 28-0. The Eagles working hard on another drive got the ball down 1st and goal again on the 9 yard line but Douglas Berkman stepped in front of a pass for an interception denying Second Baptist a chance to put some points on the board. After a 16 yard return by Berkman the Mavericks had the ball on their own 16. SJS moved the ball out to mid field but was forced to punt on a 4th and 7. Tweardy booted another long one 48 yards and the Maverick punt team sprinted down field and caused a fumble and recovered on the 10. Gow proceeded to cross the goalline on the second play with a 6 yard run. Tweardys extra point was blocked and the Mavs posted a comfortable lead 34-0 heading into the fourth quarter. Will Griffin and Kory Haywood both kept the Eagles in check with interceptions to preserve the shutout and the Maverick victory!
