Mavericks Let Go of Mustangs in the First and Final Quarters

Sam Chambers
St. John's drops second district game to Memorial Mustangs.  Looking for a road cure.
With mist in the air on Skip Lee Field, Memorial Mustangs put up a 3-0 lead in the first quarter making the Mavericks adjust on the fly.  St. John's settled down in the second period and reeled off 5 goals to take 5-4 lead at the half.
Caldwell Flores started the flood of goals for St. John's followed by Reed Daniel Zach Gaitz Jordan Schuler and William Jewett.
Gaitz picked it up again in the third period with a goal assisted by Chris Gow.  Jewett found William Payne for one more and it seemed as though the Mavericks were about to trample the Mustangs, but turnovers kept Memorial in the hunt and the visitors tied it with 7 minutes to go in the game.
St. John's would be shut out in the first and last periods even though the Mavericks out shot the Mustangs, 44-20 on the night.
Even though St. John's cleared and rode well, they turned the ball over too many times and gave Memorial the chance they needed for a first win over St. John's in 15 years.
St. John's travels to Kingwood on Wednesday and then to Florida for the weekend.
