Whew!!! WOW!!! What a game. The Mavericks were so fired up and ready to play last night against the Falcons. They were excited to play together and have fun on the field. The Falcons won the coin toss and chose to attack the end where the sun was shining in our goalie's eyes. The Mavericks started with the ball with the Hayden play. The girls took the ball down the field and into the D, but could not convert on the pass. The Mavericks had a few more scoring opportunities, but the ball seem to go wide of the cage or the Kinkaid goalie would make a good save. Finally half way through the first half of the game, the Mavericks were awarded a corner. Katherine Brock pushed the ball out to Emma Erwin and after a few dribbles Emma was able to shoot the ball to the left corner of the goal to put the Mavericks on top 1-0. After the ball was played up and down the field, the Falcons were able to score in the right side of the goal with 1:20 left on the clock. The Mavericks were able to keep the ball and when the half end the score was tied 1-1. The Kinkaid Falcons started with the ball the second half of the game. The Mavericks stole the ball and drove 65 yards and then shot the ball wide of the cage. For the next 15 minutes the ball was played between the two 25 yard lines. Finally with about 9 minutes left on the clock the Mavericks had a fast break where the ball went from Joan Scheirman to Emma Erwin to Caroline Gibson who was positioned at the top of the cirlce. On the move Caroline received the ball and shot to the left corner and scored making the score Mavericks 2 Falcons 1. After the Mavericks' time out they came out strong and kept the ball from the D until 1 minute left in the game. The Falcons took a time out to discuss strategy, but the Mavericks were ready for the Circle Play. They stopped the ball and cleared it to our forwards, which kept the ball near the 50 yard line for the remaining of the game. The Mavericks came out VICTORIOUS as the JV Field Hockey Champions.
This group of girls was amazing. The forwards--Katherine Brock, Caroline Dawson, Caroline Gibson, Bobbie Richardson, Jessica Carroll and Annabel Massey. The Middies--Emma Erwin, Mary Harrison, Krissy Incavo and Leigh Pruden. The defense--Hayden Foutch, Joan Scheirman, Julia Bratic, Lindsey Collie, Hannah Gershenson, Lily Bernicker and Margaret Mauel. The Goalies--Kelsey Duncombe-Smith and Ariel Malloy. The overall record of this team was 13-1. They scored 50 goals and only gave up 4. I loved coaching them this season.
