  • Social-Emotional Learning

    During May, our Sharing Circle topics will focus on self and social awareness and relationship skills. Three of our topic threads focus on learning to work through small and big emotions, boundaries, and consent, and reviewing our Lower School theme.

  • Math

    • Knowing relative sizes of measurement units within one system of units.
    • Converting units of measurement within the same system.
    • Using the four operations to solve word problems involving distances, liquid volumes, masses of objects, and money, including problems involving fractions or decimals and problems that require converting measurements within the customary and metric systems.
  • Language Arts

    • Learning to identify and write compound and complex sentences
    • Practicing creative writing across genres, including poetry, fiction, nonfiction, and readers’ theater
    • Exploring imaginative thinking strategies (such as SCAMPER) to generate, expand, and refine original ideas in writing
    • Applying creative thinking skills to develop unique perspectives and strengthen storytelling across different forms of writing
  • Social Studies

    • Examining and identifying maps showing the major U.S. territories acquired in the nation’s westward expansion. 
    • Explaining why and how the United States acquired key territories and depict how this affected the people already living in each region. 
    • Describing aspects of life for people living in the West during the 1800s. 
    • Identifying the effects of westward expansion
    • Describing the benefits and drawbacks pioneers experienced when they moved west.
  • Science

    • Programming robots using Lego Mindstorms EV3
    • Debugging code and solving problems to improve robot performance and achieve task goals
    • Working collaboratively in groups by contributing ideas, listening to others, and supporting teammates

    • Working with micro:bits
    • Emptying out & cleaning their backpacks (they will use the same one in C5)

    • Recognizing what language has been acquired throughout the school year
    • Showcasing understanding of our class novel through independent reading and student-led presentations

    • Collaborative Mixed Media Posters: Working in groups to create large themed posters
    • Understanding how to contribute ideas for the group as well as how to compromise
    • Drawing from imagination, memory and observation
    • Understanding balance, scale, composition and design

    • Learning new la pentatonic games and songs
    • Practicing half hole technique on the recorder
    • Discovering melodic patterns in fun pop songs

    • Using SORA to borrow ebooks, audiobooks, and magazines
    • Practicing sustained silent reading

  • Tech Lab

    • Experiencing a free choice of tools and software we used this year to expand our knowledge of their applications

    • Weaving together skills from the year in outdoor games and challenges
