Allison Chavez Young '03
Read MoreThe story of Sweet Paris Crêperie & Café all started when a craving for crêpes combined with the savvy business acumen of ALLISON YOUNG CHAVEZ ’03.Allison arrived at St. John’s in Class 7, determined to prove she belonged at the academically rigorous school. She quickly found her footing, enthralled by passionate faculty members like Kim Keany and Alice Kagi. Allison is grateful for the experience she got here, from a memorable Bio II course to being captain of the volleyball team. While she developed a love of science, she knew early on she would be looking for an undergraduate business program. -

The term “maverick,” he admits, feels strong—reserved for someone doing something especially bold. To his classmates and many other fellow alumni, though, the award is a perfect fit. Classmate KEVIN DOWLEN ’06 says, “Deets has had an independent and creative spirit as long as I've known him.” JOHN GRIFFIN ’06 describes him as, “the most fiercely independent, creative, lovably 'weird' contrarian I know. He always took his own path.” -

LAUREN AVERETT BYERS ’94, a Professor and Thoracic Section Chief at MD Anderson Cancer Center, traces her path from a self-described “rule follower” at St. John’s School to a global leader in oncology. Born in Berkeley, CA, she moved to Houston in fifth grade, where her journey at SJS began. -
Dr. Emily Wang '93
A St. John’s Class of 1993 graduate and MacArthur Fellow, Dr. Emily Wang has been investigating and researching the harmful effect incarceration has on “people’s health while also working to improve the health outcomes of those currently in our prison system.” Dr. Wang is a professor at Yale University and directs the SEICHE Center for Health and Justice. The SEICHE Center is a collaboration between the Yale School of Medicine and Yale Law School focusing on understanding and addressing the extensive public health harms of mass incarceration through clinical care, research, education, and legal scholarship and advocacy. Dr. Wang leads the Center’s Health Justice Lab investigating how incarceration influences chronic health conditions, including cardiovascular disease, cancer, and opioid use disorder.Read More -
Emma Erwin '11
Read MoreAfter her 13-year run at St. John's, Emma went on to Middlebury College—a small liberal arts school in Vermont—to play D-III field hockey and pursue an education in physics and mathematics. Her work centered around atomic physics, where she spent her time trapping clouds of atoms in magneto-optical chambers and taking measurements with lasers. But in the meantime, the majority of her free time was spent outside–running and hiking in the green mountains of Vermont, white mountains of New Hampshire, and Adirondacks in New York. -
H. Grant Thomas, Jr. '63
Read MoreFor over 55 years, Grant Thomas `63 has been positively impacting the lives of young people. Taking lessons learned from years of teaching in the classroom, Grant has established a multitude of peer-based programs that provide support, learning, and connection to literally thousands of students throughout the City of Austin and the State of Texas. -
Katherine Y. King '92
Dr. Katherine Y. King is an Associate Professor of Pediatric Infectious Diseases at Baylor College of medicine. She studied biochemical sciences at Harvard University and then completed a dual-degree program at Washington University in St. Louis where she earned both her M.D. and Ph.D. over the course of seven years. She returned to Houston to complete her residency and fellowship at Baylor. In addition to her research, she is also a co-founder and serves on the advi¬sory board of Doctors For Change (https://doctorsforchange.org/), a nonprofit that seeks “to increase access to care and improve the health of all Houstonians and all Texans through research, education, collaboration, and advocacy.”Read More -
Zachary Heinzerling '02
Zachary began his career at HBO as a production assistant. He quickly worked his way up the ranks on four consecutive Emmy Award-winning documentaries and the Emmy Award-winning series 24/7, working as a field producer and cinematographer. In 2012, he left HBO to complete his feature debut, the multi-award-winning film, Cutie and the Boxer, which he both directed and shot.Read More -
Christy Haubegger ’86
Christy is an Agent at Creative Artists Agency (CAA), a leading entertainment and sports agency with offices in Los Angeles, New York, London, Nashville, and Beijing, where she provides insights on diverse markets to the agency’s clients and buyers. She is based in the Los Angeles office, and works closely with such clients as Salma Hayek, Eva Longoria, Shakira, Jennifer Lopez, Andy Garcia, and America Ferrera, among others. Christy gave the commencement address during St. John’s School’s 2018 Commencement ceremony.Read More

Football Home Opener Comeback Inspired by Honored Legends Skip Lee and Frank McMurrey
Varsity Football won its home opener against Second Baptist 28-14, scoring all its points in the second half. The victory capped a special night for St. John’s School as two legends were honored under the Friday night lights.Read More -

Read MoreSt. John's School is rededicating the newly constructed Skip Lee Field and the Frank McMurrey Memorial Track on Friday, August 28, during the first Varsity Football home game of the season. Please join Headmaster Dan Alig to honor two legends of St. John’s by celebrating these new facilities named in their honor, which will serve the school for years to come. -
Yen Wins Humanitarian Award
Congratulations to Ashley Yen '22 for winning the Molly Meyer Humanitarian Award for Yale this spring. The award is "presented annually to male and female senior student-athletes whose character exemplifies selfless devotion along with compassion and concern for their team and the community at Yale and beyond.”Read More
Yen captained the Yale Varsity Golf team this past spring and played all four years for the Bulldogs. She is a three-time WGCA All-American Scholar, and she made the 2025-26 Ivy League Women's Golf Academic All-Ivy team. -
Can-Do Perdue : Multisport Maverick Earns All-American Honors for Brown
Read MoreCongratulations to John Perdue ’22 for being named Associated Press Honorable Mention All-American for the Brown University Football program. Perdue, a senior captain, led the team with 88 tackles on the season. He was also named Second-Team All-Ivy and Academic All-District. Perdue is a finalist for the CSC Academic All-America award, to be announced on January 27.While at St. John’s, Perdue competed in multiple sports. In Swimming, he broke the school record in the 50 free. He is the only 2X All-American in the St. John’s Wrestling program. In football, he was a three-year starter who led the team in rushing & scoring (2020) and tackles (2019). He also competed for the Maverick Lacrosse and Track & Field teams.
Perdue is hanging up his cleats for good and does not plan to compete on any other team at Brown.
"This is the end of the road in competitive sports for me," said Perdue. "That said, I loved the brotherhood we built at Brown Football, and I will definitely miss playing alongside those guys." -
Doss Nets United Soccer Coaches Scholar All-American and NEWMAC Honors for MIT
Read MoreCongratulations to Arianna Doss ’23 of the MIT Women’s Soccer program for making the 2025 United Soccer Coaches Scholar All-America Team. Doss was named Scholar All-American Third Team, Scholar All-Region Second Team, United Soccer Coaches First Team All-Region, NEWMAC All-Academic, and NEWMAC First Team All-Conference. The Engineers (22-3-1) won the NEWMAC Conference title for the third straight season and advanced to the third round of the NCAA tournament. -
NCAA Champions!
Congratulations to Margot Manning '23 and Texas A&M for winning the 2025 NCAA Women's Volleyball D1 National Championship. The Aggies defeated three #1 seeds in the tournament and did not drop a set in both of their Final-Four matches.Read More
