Mavericks Capture Third Consecutive State Championships

College Station - TX

The Mavericks captured their third consecutive Texas Tennis Coaches Association Private Schools State Team Tennis Championship with a 7-3 victory over the Kinkaid Falcons in matches played at Bryan High School.

The real battle started in the semifinals, with the Mavericks beating Dallas Jesuit/Ursuline 7-4. Our boys doubles set the tone with Shiv Khera and Teo Nelson winning line 1, 6-0, 6-3 while Shayan Khan and Ryan Vo took line 2 doubles, 6-3, 6-2. Dallas Jesuit/Ursuline quickly bounced back by taking both girls doubles and the mixed doubles. The Mavericks were down 2-3 before the singles went on. Our boys singles proved too strong for our opponents as Khaleel, Shaan, Finn and Levi took all lines in straight sets and moved the score to 6-3 in favor of the Mavericks. We lost line 2 girls singles, but Kayden gave our 7th match for the Mavericks to clinch.

We knew the final against Kinkaid was going to be a tough one, as always.

The opening of the match was tight, with each team winning two of the doubles pairings. Shiv Khera and Teo Nelson  brought home No. 1 boys doubles, 6-2, 6-2 while Khaleel Abaroa and Levi Blumrosen won the second line, 6-1, 6-1.

Kinkaid evened things up by winning lines 1 and 2 girls doubles. Lana Nguyen and Hannah Holmsten took the first line, while Brooke Yu and Georgia Burba won the second.

The tide began to turn in our favor in the mixed doubles. Kayden Johnson and Shaan Bhagia gave the Mavericks a 3-2 lead with a 6-4, 6-1 decision over Gus Pielop and Jasmine Nguyen.

The Mavericks went on to win three of the four boys singles, with the third match incomplete. Khaleel Abaroa won No. 1 singles, Shaan Bhagia took the second matchup, and Levi won No. 4. In the meantime Finn Brewer was in a battle with Chap Young in line 3, which was not completed.

The Mavericks sealed the match at No. 1 girls singles, as Kayden Johnson overcame Jasmine Nguyen in a hard-fought contest, 6-4/6-4.

Additionally, Kayden Johnson was named the Wilson Most Valuable Girls Player and Khaleel Abaroa took Boys MVP accolades.

What an amazing performance by the boys as they went undefeated throughout the entire tournament in all boys singles and doubles matches.
