CANDLELIGHTERS FAQs
What is the Candlelighters Fall Festival?
The Candlelighters Fall Festival is an annual event with the nonprofit, Candlelighters. Every year St. John’s Class 8 students prepare and manage a Halloween-themed festival for children undergoing cancer treatment and their families. This year’s event will take place on October 26 from 2-4pm on campus under Big Red. However, we do ask that participating students arrive at 1pm for setup and stay until their booths are completely cleaned up.
Is it mandatory for all Class 8 students to participate?
I would LOVE for all Class 8 students to be able to participate. I also understand that students have several commitments. While I cannot force all students to participate, I highly encourage all to be involved in this wonderful event and in a way that is meaningful for them. Even if your child can only stay for a portion of the day or be part of helping a group to plan and prepare, I encourage them to participate. They can even join a group and help them to prepare, even if they cannot be part of managing the booth on the day of the event.
How does my child sign up to participate?
We will hold a Class 8 Candlelighters Assembly on October 3 during extended advisory. During this time, we will review how to get involved and expectations of all volunteers. Students will be able to form groups of their choosing with as few as 4 and as many of 6 students in each group. One student from each group will serve as its leader and will complete the Google form received in their email. These forms must be completed and turned in by the morning of October 5. If your child would like to get involved and experiences any trouble finding a group, please encourage them to reach out to me at Lmadof@sjs.org.
How can I encourage my child to be involved?
Ask your child about the Candlelighters Assembly on October 3, and see if he/she has found a group with 4-6 other students. If they have not, let them know to email me. There is room for every single student to get involved, so nobody should feel left out. Let them know how incredibly special and important it is that their class was chosen to represent this event and what joy they will bring to the children they help that day. Assembly slides will be made available on the MS Community Service Resource Page after October 3. Please do keep in mind that not everyone feels comfortable participating and that is ok.
