The girls team had several stellar performances at their home meet this weekend. Girls track athlete of the meet award was presented to Melissa Hulme, who tied for the award w/ Faith Ukanwa of Episcopal. Melissa scored 23 of the 84 points earned by the St. John's track team. She placed first in the 3200, and 1600. With a 15 second time imrovement over her 2 mile performance last weekend, Hulme finished her second 2 mile race on the track in 11:24. In her first 1600m race of her career, Melissa finished in a time of 5:20. Additionally, she anchored 4x800m relay team to a third place finish. Congratulations on a great performance and capturing the "girl athlete of the meet" award! In her first meet of the season, all SPC hurdler, Sally Armstrong ran 16.68 to finish first among SPC competition, (second overall). Sally was only .42 off her personal best performance from last year of 16.26 in the 100m hurdles. Stephanie Melton tied her personal best perfromance this weekend. She vaulted to a third place overall finish in her first competition of the season, clearing 7'6". Stephanie also earned the top position among competitors from EHS and KHS. The 4x800 team of Captain Lauren Bell, Brittany Hodgson, Sarah Daniel and Melissa Hulme all ran solid races to finish third place with a time of 10:44. A notable performance was run by freshman Sarah Daniel, who confidently stepped in at the start line for an injured senior Laura Nielsen. Daniel took 17 seconds off her previous mark, running a personal best leg. In the 200m dash, Sophomore Courtney Miller ran to a 3rd place finish with a time of 27.32. This mark is her second best time of her SJS career in her first 200m open race of the 2004 season. The Rebels finished fourth as a team with 84 points, behind champions Episcopal of Houston (124), Kinkaid (96.5), and St. Agnes (86).
