St. John's Upper School Latin students competed against several area schools at Rice University's Owl Certamen last Saturday (1/21). Students competed in individual academic tests and on four-person Competitive Certamen teams. At the advanced level, Anna Huang ('14) maintained her reputation as a mythology genius, earning 1st place on the Ancient Mythology test; Zach Long ('12) and Adam Morrison ('14) both showcased their knowledge of Roman history and culture (Zach earned 1st place and Adam earned 3rd place on the academic test); Savannah Ezelle ('13), who composed a modern mythological story, earned 2nd place in the Modern Mythology category. Intermediate level Latin students also excelled in their categories: Vinay Gajula ('15) dominated the Latin Grammar test and earned 1st place; Henry Paradise ('15) also excelled in the Latin Grammar test and earned 1st place under the novice category. Vinay also placed 2nd on the Intermediate Latin Mottoes test. Katherine Wu ('15) and Henry both demonstrated a strong knowledge of Ancient Mythology (Katherine earned 2nd place and Henry earned 3rd place).

All students who attended also participated in Competitive Certamen. Certamen is a game similar to Quiz Bowl where students compete against other schools using their knowledge of Roman mythology, grammar, history, and literature. The SJS Upper School intermediate team (Vinay, Katherine, and Henry) won 2nd place, even being one person short of a full four-person Certamen team. The Upper School also had two advanced teams (Team A: Elliott Lapin '12, Adam Morrison '14, Savannah Ezelle '13, and Tommy Cowell '13; and Team B: Zach Long '12, Alyyah Malick '14, Anna Huang '14, and Nikolai Hood '14) and both teams made it to the final round. Competing against a visiting school from California (which included students who had competed at the National level in Competitive Certamen), their usual OWL Certamen victory wasn't achieved, but instead the two teams earned 2nd and 3rd place overall.
With Owl Certamen now behind them, St. John's Latin students will go on to compete in similar, more challenging, Latin competitions at the Area and State Level in February and March. Go, Mavs!
