    College Symposium

    We look forward to welcoming Class 10 and 11 students and parents/guardians to our annual College Symposium on Sunday, February 1, from 2–3:40 p.m. This program offers timely insight into college admission and emerging trends in the application process through two sessions led by higher education and admission leaders. Parents will begin in Lowe Theater and students in Chao, switching locations after the first session. Complete the registration form below to confirm your attendance, and please note that sessions will not be recorded.

    Sessions include:
    • Building Inclusive Campus Communities: How Colleges Understand Students' Lived Experiences. The core focus is to transparency around how colleges approach inclusion and student support at a time when they have less personal data and are navigating new legal and demographic realities.
    • Behind the Admission Curtain: How Colleges Evaluate Students in 2026 and Beyond. With ever changing policies and processes, admissions experts will demystify how U.S. colleges are actually reading applications in the era of AI, limited supplemental essays, and shifting institutional goals.

    • Grace Chapin James, Assistant Vice Provost for Undergraduate Admissions at Washington University in St. Louis
    • Olufemi “Femi” Ogundele, Associate Vice Chancellor and Dean of Enrollment Management and Undergraduate Admissions at UC Berkeley
    • Dan Warner, Vice Provost for Admissions and Financial Aid at Lehigh University
    • Calvin Wise, Dean of Undergraduate Admission at Johns Hopkins University

    There will be a K-12 faculty meeting on Friday, February 6th, which requires a late start for LS students. We are asking parents to delay drop-off until 8:15 AM, and instruction will begin at 8:30. If you're unable to delay drop-off, we will provide early morning care for a limited number of students.     Class One students will travel to NASA Space Center on February 11th as a culmination of their science and social studies work this year. Please send a 100% disposable sack lunch and drink, labeled with your child’s name. (NO lunch kits, please.) Students should wear jeans, black shorts, or uniform bottoms with a RED shirt (SJS t-shirt or uniform shirt).

    Houston Grand Opera
    Class 4 will travel to the Houston Grand Opera on February 12th for a special matinee performance of Hansel & Gretel. They will get to hear directly from the cast and crew during intermission. If you previously signed up as a chaperone, please watch for an email with details from Julie Ballew. Students should wear their regular school uniform and bring a lunch from home.

    As we celebrate love and kindness in the month of February, all students are invited to participate in a special dress day on February 13th. Students may wear anything red, white, or pink, or they may wear their normal uniform. Please see page 31 of the Lower School Handbook for specific guidelines for out-of-uniform dress.

    All grade levels will have their class Friendship Parties at 2:15 on Friday, February 13th. Students will play a game, have a treat, complete a craft, and listen to a festive story. We kindly ask that only those parents who signed up to volunteer are in attendance.
    All students are welcome to bring a Valentine (nut-free candy is acceptable) for all students in their advisory. This is optional, but if anything is brought in, all classmates in the advisory should be included. In the spirit of inclusion, we kindly ask that all valentines be the same general item for everyone in the class. Additionally, we do not exchange valentines between students outside of their homeroom. These items may be brought into class on February 12th or 13th.

  • K-12 Parent Wellness Event: From Relational Aggression to Relational Leadership w/ Dr. Melanie Gregg, Marisa Gonzalez, and US Girl Leadership Panel

    This engaging 1-hour session will explore how girls experience relational challenges and transform these experiences into leadership skills.

    Session Overview:
    • Part 1 – Didactic Presentation: Dr. Melanie Gregg will provide insights into relational aggression, its impact, and strategies for guiding girls toward positive relational and leadership growth.
    • Part 2 – Panel Discussion: Hear directly from SJS girl leaders as they share personal experiences with relational aggression and how they applied those lessons to develop leadership skills.

  • Go Texan Day @ LS

    On February 27th, schools all over Houston will celebrate the start of the rodeo season with Go Texan Day. All students are invited to get in the spirit by wearing their favorite western wear. Dig out your best jeans, boots, and cowboy hats to join in the festivities! Hats may not be worn in the classroom, but they can be worn outside. If students do not wish to participate, they can wear their regular school uniform. (Please note that western wear for Go Texan Day does NOT include gear for the Houston Texans, University of Texas, Texas A&M University, etc.)
  • Parent Case Studies

    All Class 11 parents and guardians are invited to an interactive workshop led by the College Counseling Team in partnership with admissions officers from a range of institutions. Together, we will explore the mechanics of the college application process, culminating in a mock admissions committee in which participants review sample SJS applications and render admission decisions. The program will be held on February 27 from 8:45–9:45 a.m. in the Chao Assembly Room.
