  • Class 2 Dumpling Day

    C2 Classrooms
Friday, October 10, 2025 is Class Two’s Dumpling Day! Dumpling Day is a celebratory event that culminates our first social studies unit: community. Our students are learning how diverse cultures influence the makeup of our community- essential people and places, including restaurants, places of worship, museums, hospitals, entertainment venues, grocery stores, etc. Dumplings, or a variation of dumplings, are enjoyed across many cultures, and we’ve created Dumpling Day to explore the beauty of cultural diversity, to appreciate our differences, and to realize just how much we all have in common.
This special day invites Class Two families to provide a dumpling dish they feel represents their family’s culture. Examples include: ravioli (Italy), gyoza (Japan), pierogi (Central & Eastern Europe), tamale (Mexico), kroppkaka (Sweden), kreplach (Israel), empanada (South America), luqaimat (Middle East), apple dumpling (America), and samosa (South & Central Asia). Dumpling Day is a student-attended event that will take place in our classroom from 2:00-3:00 p.m.
Should you choose to prepare or purchase a dish, please bring a large enough sampling to share with at least 16 friends and a card saying what it is, country of origin, and when it’s enjoyed in your family/culture. Please also note if nuts (or other common allergens) are included in your dish. Please do not send something that needs to be refrigerated or reheated. All food drop-offs should be delivered to the classroom before 1:45 p.m.

    Candlelighters Fall Festival

The Candlelighters Fall Festival is an annual event that brings together children who are undergoing cancer treatment and their families for a fun and festive fall carnival run entirely by our Class 8 students and family volunteers in partnership with the nonprofit Candlelighters. Class 8 families, please consider registering as a volunteer if you have not done so already! Registration for parent volunteers can be found HERE.

    CANDLELIGHTERS FAQs

    1. What is the Candlelighters Fall Festival?
The Candlelighters Fall Festival is an annual event with the nonprofit,  Candlelighters. Every year St. John’s Class 8 students prepare and manage a Halloween-themed festival for children undergoing cancer treatment and their families. This year’s event will take place on October 26 from 2-4pm on campus under Big Red. However, we do ask that participating students arrive at 1pm for setup and stay until their booths are completely cleaned up.

    1. Is it mandatory for all Class 8 students to participate?
I would LOVE for all Class 8 students to be able to participate. I also understand that students have several commitments. While I cannot force all students to participate, I highly encourage all to be involved in this wonderful event and in a way that is meaningful for them. Even if your child can only stay for a portion of the day or be part of helping a group to plan and prepare, I encourage them to participate. They can even join a group and help them to prepare, even if they cannot be part of managing the booth on the day of the event.

    1. How does my child sign up to participate?
We will hold a Class 8 Candlelighters Assembly on October 3 during extended advisory. During this time, we will review how to get involved and expectations of all volunteers. Students will be able to form groups of their choosing with as few as 4 and as many of 6 students in each group. One student from each group will serve as its leader and will complete the Google form received in their email. These forms must be completed and turned in by the morning of October 5. If your child would like to get involved and experiences any trouble finding a group, please encourage them to reach out to me at Lmadof@sjs.org

    1. How can I encourage my child to be involved?
Ask your child about the Candlelighters Assembly on October 3, and see if he/she has found a group with 4-6 other students. If they have not, let them know to email  me. There is room for every single student to get involved, so nobody should feel left out. Let them know how incredibly special and important it is that their class was chosen to represent this event and what joy they will bring to the children they help that day. Assembly slides will be made available on the MS Community Service Resource Page after October 3. Please do keep in mind that not everyone feels comfortable participating and that is ok.
