SJS Visual Arts Department Hosts 2023 Artist in Residence Guadalupe Hernandez

The SJS Visual Arts Department welcomed Guadalupe Hernandez to campus for the annual Artist in Residence Program. Over the course of one week, Mr. Hernandez worked with Lower, Middle and Upper School art students to create alebrijes, or brightly colored Mexican folk art sculptures of mythical creatures. These creatures are beautifully featured in the current Glassell Gallery installation titled, “Dream Forest.” Thank you, Mr. Hernandez, for sharing your talents and passion with our students. More about the artist:
Guadalupe Hernandez is a local, multidisciplinary artist who earned a MFA from Houston Baptist University. Hernandez was born in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico, before relocating to Pleasanton, Texas. Despite moving to the United States, Hernandez maintained a deep connection to his Mexican heritage and customs through time-honored familial traditions. Hernandez’s practice examines his cultural identity by reinterpreting childhood memories and family stories connecting his past and offering greater meaning to his present. Through the use of photographic references accumulated over several years, retracing the markets, street scenes, and people of his homeland Hernandez creates elaborate Papel Picado portraits and figurative oil paintings with gestural brushwork.
