SJS Hosts Fall Instrumental Concert

St. John’s School hosted the Fall Instrumental Concert on Sunday, October 25, 2026, in the Lowe Theater. The musicians performed under the direction of Middle School and Upper School Band Director Nick Thomas and Middle School and Upper School Orchestra Director Alisa Pederson. The two co-directed the Symphony and Concert Philharmonia.
Styled as a “haunt-cert” in keeping with the October timing, the performances highlighted selections from multiple genres including classical, rock, samba, and jazz. The concert displayed the talents of Beginning Band, Combined MS Orchestra, Intermediate Band, Symphony, and Concert Philharmonia, ending with an energetic showcase by Jazz Band.

Beginning Band opened the evening with a rousing performance of Samba de Soleil followed by Rock This Band!

The Combined MS Orchestra which includes Orchestra 6, intermediate violins, and intermediate viola, cello, and bass, segued into Vivaldi’s Inverno, Scenes from Winter and a macabre rendition of Rosin Eating Zombies from Outer Space.

Intermediate Band delivered a delightfully spooky performance of This is Halloween from Tim Burton’s beloved classic The Nightmare Before Christmas along with Midnight Zoomies, a tale of pet mischief in the moonlight.

Symphony brought to life Homer’s epic tale The Iliad, translated into music by Soon Hee Newbold. The performance took listeners on a journey of adventure with powerful rhythms and contrasting musical themes.

Concert Philharmonia continued the haunting theme of the evening with their rendition of Halloween at the Symphony. Blending a variety of favorites, the medley delivered suspense, high drama, and eerie musical effects. They concluded their session with a performance of Dance of the Tumblers.

For the final act, Jazz Band took the audience on a musical journey through American history and concluded with a series of popular radio hits reimagined as jazz compositions. Their selections included Sandu, St. Louis Blues, Moten Swing, Michael Jackson’s Thriller and The Rolling Stones (I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction.

You can next see St. John’s performers on stage for the Middle School musical performance of A Year with Frog and Toad on November 12-13, 2026, in Lowe Theater.
